CAMBODIA. Khmer Times (08 June 2026)More than 270,000 Cambodians have enrolled in the government’s flagship Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme since its launch in January 2024, marking progress towards the national target of providing skills training to 1.5 million young people and workers.

The milestone comes as Cambodia prepares to celebrate the ninth National TVET Day on June 15–16 under the theme “TVET Provides Skills, Jobs and Income”, with Prime Minister Hun Manet scheduled to preside over the event.

The TVET programme for 1.5 million youth from poor and vulnerable households was launched by Mr Hun Manet on November 14, 2023, as part of government efforts to strengthen human capital development, improve workforce competitiveness and expand employment opportunities.

Sun Mesa, spokesman for the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, said the ministry undertook extensive preparations before launching the programme, including awareness campaigns, training facilities, instructors and equipment.

Mesa said the ministry has worked closely with the private sector to ensure training programmes align with labour market needs and industry demand.

“We need to ensure that the skills we provide through training are actually accepted and demanded by the private sector. That is what will make the programme successful,” he said.

The programme covers 10 sectors and 45 skill areas, ranging from agro-industry and manufacturing to service occupations.

Mesa said strong public interest in the initiative reflects growing recognition of the value of technical and vocational education in securing employment and generating income.

To improve accessibility, training courses are offered through flexible schedules, including weekday, evening and weekend classes, allowing workers and other participants to pursue skills training while maintaining existing commitments.

The National TVET Day celebrations will highlight government achievements in skills development and raise awareness of vocational training opportunities nationwide.

Mesa said activities will be organised across the country to encourage students, parents and employers to recognise the importance of technical and vocational education in supporting economic growth and employment.
