About the Event

The Australian Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) in collaboration with the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education, Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) are hosting a multi-session TVET dialogue in 2022.

The first session, titled 'The Evolution of Apprenticeships' aims to explore the current role of apprenticeships and how technical and vocational education and training is delivered in Australia, Finland and Malaysia.

Speakers will provide overviews of their respective TVET systems, share how apprenticeships have evolved to meet industry human capital needs, and explore how TVET can be strengthened through partnerships and collaborations.


ABOUT SPEAKERS

John Tucker
General Manager @TAFE Queensland - SkillsTech, Australia
As General Manager, John is responsible for the strategic direction and overall operation of TAFE Queensland SkillsTech as the lead TAFE region and the largest public provider of trade and technician training in Queensland. As a key member of the TAFE Queensland Executive team John is an experienced educator at heart and has a passion for teaching and learning. Prior to stepping into the TAFE Queensland SkillsTech General Manager role, John was the Executive Director of Educational Delivery, developing VET strategies and policies to ensure the viable delivery of trade and technician programs that achieve 'best practice' training outcomes for students and employers, locally and across Australia. John leads a team of dedicated directors & managers to support TAFE Queensland SkillsTech to train and educate the thousands of students who choose to explore a vocational education and training pathway. John is the Chair of WorldSkills Queensland and is a graduate member of the Australian.
Dr. Izwah Ismail
Deputy Director (Academics) @Politeknik Ungku Omar, Malaysia
Izwah Ismail, PhD, is currently the Deputy Director of Academic at Politeknik Ungku Omar, Ipoh. As a technology specialist, she has published articles in domestic and international journals and proceedings, as well as contributed as reviewer for number of indexed journals. Her experiences specialises in technology solutions, focusing on future proofing through digital transformation and the introduction of IoT applications. Presently, her research interest focuses on fibre optic communication, mobile engineering and telecommunication network. She also actively participates in international and national level TVET and skills initiatives. In 2018, she was the coordinator for The International Skills Partnership between PUO-West Lothian College, UK and more recently, she was appointed as a steering committee of The MBAM-ILO-UK Partnership for Enhancement of a Sector Skills Body and Industry-Led TVET Modalities.
 

Juha Hautanen
Head of Department - School of Professional Teacher Education College @JAMK University of Applied Sciences, Finland
Juha Hautanen (MSc) works as Head of Department at the School of Professional Teacher Education College of JAMK University of Applied Sciences. His main responsibility is to run initial professional teacher education program to VET, TVET and Universities of education. A qualified professional teacher, he has prior to his current position e.g. worked as a Senior Lecturer of Entrepreneurship and Innovations at the JAMK Generator, a unique unit of JAMK focused on fostering Entrepreneurship and Innovations, as well as in various roles in sales, marketing and business development both in the public and private sector. With over 20 years’ experience on education he has developed learner centered and competence based education in university industry collaboration. Juha Hautanen’s specific areas of expertise include the development of educational strategies, establishment and management of incubators within higher education contexts, and teaching and coaching.
