Background

In Brunei, the Department of Mathematics in Chung Hwa Middle School, through its instructional strategy in ‘Project 4C-Minecraft’, is heeding the call of the nation’s SPN-21 curriculum to integrate 21st century skills such as ICT skills, thinking skills and problem solving into content subjects.

21st century employability skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration skills (4Cs) are integrated into the high school mathematics syllabus by meshing project-based and game-based learning. Minecraft Education Edition, the education version of open-world building game is used as the medium to develop project-based group assignments, integrated into the mathematics syllabus.

The six-phase process in Project 4C-Minecraft provides an example of how real-world skills for employability – the 4Cs – is embedded into Mathematics; which could be replicated to other STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects. STEM skills is the foundation for industrial, manufacturing and corporate jobs for the 21st century, paving the way for Industry 4.0.
