Implementing Institution(s):
Institute of Brunei Technical Education

Background

In Brunei, the IBTE TVET Academy is embedding action research in their continuous professional development (CPD)training and development of TVET pre-service and in-service instructors to bridge the gap between technical industry expertise and pedagogical competence and also strengthen the capacity of trainee TVET instructors to become reflective, evidence-informed and innovative practitioners.

The practice brings a shift to CPD from passive to active problem solving towards holistic upskilling. The engagement of trainees in vocational action research culminating in public showcase of cross-disciplinary action research case studies promotes the development of required skillsets of TVET teachers in personal, social and vocational competences, consequently improving quality teaching towards benchmarked standards of the Regional TVET Teacher Standards for ASEAN (RTTS).

Through action research-based CPD, sustained mentoring to trainees post-training, action research showcases for sharing successful evidence-based practice, the culture of reflective practice, continuous innovation and learner-centred quality enhancement is envisioned to contribute to a future-ready TVET workforce.
