Borneo Bulletin, Brunei (October, 2020) - The ARMECS Bridging Programme under the Manpower Industry Steering Committee (MISC) Construction was officially launched by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, in his capacity as the Chairman of Manpower Planning and Employment Council (MPEC).

Several Cabinet and deputy ministers appointed as the members and working committee of the MPEC attended the launch at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Building Complex yesterday.

The ceremony began with a speech by Legislative Council member and Co-Chair of MISC Construction Yang Berhormat Siti Rozaimeriyanty binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Haji Abdul Rahman, followed by a speech from Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew.

The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Development (MoD) and Politeknik Brunei (PB).

Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew also presented certificates of appreciation to 22 iReady employers.

Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, meanwhile, presented certificates to 41 consultant firms which will conduct six months of skills training for the ARMEC’s trainees.

The launching on October 1st was the first of several other initiatives planned through the MISC’s framework and strategy in the Construction Industry. It serves to improve the marketability and employability of locals, while ensuring they have applicable skills within the construction industries.

The initiative is a collaboration of the MISC Construction, the Ministry of Development, regulators, education institutions and companies in the construction industries.

A total of 33 trainees were selected to fill in the iReady vacancies in companies under the construction sector, where they will also undergo on-the-job training through the ARMECS Bridging Programme.

Comprising the ARMECS Bridging Programme in Draughting and the ARMECS Bridging Programme in RCC-Visor (Construction Site Supervisor), the training programme aims to close in the gap between the knowledge and skills obtained by graduates during their technical education and the construction industry’s requirements.

The programme also aims to equip qualified local graduates with the skills and experience to work professionally in the construction industry.

Training will take place from October 5 to March 30, 2021. The trainees will be instructed by specialists from 41 consultant firms, including the Public Works Department (JKR).

The trainees will be exposed to three disciplines in the construction sector: Architectural, Mechanical and Electrical, and Civil and Structural.

They will then continue their apprenticeship at 22 local construction companies for 12 months, after their initial six-month training.
