A new roadmap to join the future world of work is needed for persons with disabilities
Five key objectives have been identified in a roadmap to help create a more equitable future of work for persons with disabilities.
Persons with disabilities are already faced with challenges that puts them at greater risk of poverty and social exclusion, and hampers their participation in the world of work. Yet, new changes to the world of work will pose additional challenges that will make it difficult for persons with disabilities to reap benefits.
The publication titled, Making The Future of Work Inclusive of People With Disabilities, identifies new trends that relate to technology, skills, cultural change, demographic shifts and climate change. These are reshaping the world of work and have the potential to improve the quality of life and work. For the disadvantaged to benefit from these changes, a new roadmap must be built for disadvantaged groups, including persons with disabilities.
To work towards a better future of work for persons with disabilities, the following objectives need to be considered:
- New forms of employment relations must integrate disability inclusion;
- Skills development and lifelong learning must be inclusive;
- New infrastructure, products and services must follow the principles of Universal Design (meaning they can be accessed, understood and used by all);
- Assistive technologies must be affordable and available;
- More measures to include persons with disabilities in growing and developing areas of the economy are needed.
