Introducing tech-voc courses in maritime

A new training center recently opened and is set to offer technical-vocational (tech-voc) programs and maritime skills development not just for seafarers but other enrollees as well.

Securing a partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) the Asian Seafarers Institute (ASI) is not just going to focus on maritime related trainings, but is also set to offer tech-voc programs and skills training and development in industrial, community livelihood and other Tesda corporate trainings which has the main goal to have an enrollment to employment program.

ASI was unveiled last May 10 and according to aits Malaysian Training Director, Mohana Das, it was set up primarily to introduce and establish high-level maritime safety and simulator courses based on realism, augmented and virtual reality and Maritime Security like the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code.

Das pointed out “This aims to institute a program to our community of Filipino seafarers and maritime professionals involving all aspiring Filipinos who wish to get a skills certificate in order to find decent jobs, a better community and a progressive livelihood,” Das said.

ASI offers Simulator Courses like Bridge Familiarization, Bridge Resource Management Bridge Team Management, Bridge Resource Management Refresher, Bridge Team Management Refresher, Chart Correction, Coastal Navigation, Collision Avoidance, Extreme Weather Course, Passage / Voyage Planning Comprehensive, Radar Simulator Course, Radio Communication and Port Control Reporting, Ship Handling and Maneuvering, and Ship Steering Course.

ASI also offers Steward and Culinary Courses such as Bartending, Basic Food Nutrition and Proper Diet, Catering Management with MLC 2006, Food Handling, Food
Hygiene, Galley Hygiene and Food Sanitation, Good Housekeeping, Health and Hygiene Management, Messman Course, Shipboard Cleaning Management, and Victualling On Board Ship.

Meanwhile ASI President Jesser Cordova said ASI had a mission to spread the power of training for a better livelihood for both local and international maritime community under TRIUMPH core values — Teamwork, Reliability, Integrity, Ultra, Management, Perseverance and Humanity.

Gracing the launch ceremony is former Master and Mates Association of the Philippines Inc. National Secretary and Maritime Industry expert Capt. Rodolfo Aspillaga.
