SIBU, SARAWAK, MALAYSIA. The Borneo Post (18 July 2026) - Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has emerged as one of the country’s key pathways towards developing a skilled workforce and also providing young Malaysians with stable and competitive careers, said Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2026 TVET Carnival themed ‘TVET: Driving Future Careers’ at Bintulu Vocational College yesterday, Majang said the government had placed strong emphasis on TVET under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) 2026-2030 as a key driver of economic growth and national development.

He said the government had set a target for 70 per cent of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders to enrol in TVET programmes by the end of the 13MP period.

“The target reflects the government’s confidence in TVET and its growing recognition as one of the main pathways to building successful, stable and competitive careers,” he said.

Majang noted that the employability rate of TVET graduates remained highly encouraging, with about 95 per cent of graduates from skills training institutions securing employment within six months after completing their studies.

“Institutions such as Bintulu Vocational College continue to play a significant role in producing skilled local talents capable of meeting the demands of high-technology and future industries.

“In view of the strong employment prospect, I call on students, parents and the wider community to continue supporting the national TVET agenda.”

Majang also stressed that the perception of success could only be achieved through academic education was ‘outdated’.

“A developed nation also depends on highly-skilled workers as the backbone of its economic and industrial progress.”

The four-day carnival featured education and career exhibitions, TVET exploration activities, skills demonstrations, innovation showcases, children’s talent competitions, traditional games and entrepreneurship programmes.

Also present were Bintulu Vocational College director Sahibi Salleh and Bintulu District Education Office deputy district education officer (learning sector) Nafisah Rosli.
