Singapore. SEAMEO VOCTECH (05 July 2024)– 20 TVET  instructors from 10 SEAMEO-member countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste and Viet Nam, successfully concluded a two-week “Specialists Upgrading Course in Robotics and Smart Systems” as part of the Technical Skills Upgrading Programme (TSUP) for TVET Teachers in Southeast Asia, hosted and facilitated by the Institute of Technical Education, Education Services (ITEES) in collaboration with TVET regional Centre SEAMEO VOCTECH from 24 June to 5 July 2024.

The two-week training exposed the TVET instructors to the fundamentals of robotics, smart systems, industrial and collaborative robotics programming among others. The course emphasised practical and hands-on learning and was designed to allow participants to apply their gained knowledge to their teaching practices and to enhance their skills and competencies.

The Centre Director of SEAMEO VOCTECH, Mr Haji Norjemee bin Jenek, in his speech during the closing ceremony commended the strides made by Singapore in their use of new technology and its efforts to cascade such knowledge throughout the region.

“Singapore being the forerunner in tech-based training in the region, we greatly appreciate the nation’s effort to help and assist other ASEAN member states to also uplift and improve their technical prowess. This is a critical need for us in TVET, where we must align our curriculum to the needs of the industry especially in IR 4.0 and smart systems”, Mr Haji Norjemee remarked.

In addition to gaining knowledge on the best practices for leading and managing effective TVET institutions in the era of IR 4.0, participants will further enhance their technical skills through oneweek Post-Training Sharing Workshops (PSWS). During these workshops, instructors and trainers will cascade their learning from the TSUP in their home countries, under the supervision of SEAMEO VOCTECH, to benefit those who did not attend the training in Singapore.

The TSUP has successfully produced over 271 Master Trainers over the years and managed to share their knowledge and expertise with more than 1,767 participants throughout the region. The recent training marks the third round of this collaboration and has expanded its beneficiaries to include not only teachers and trainers but also school leaders, managers, and TVET specialists in Industry 4.0.

The closing and certificate presentation ceremony which was held at ITE Central, Singapore on 5th July 2024 was also attended by Mr Lim Boon Tiong, Chief Operating Officer, ITEES and Ms. Tan Shin Gee, Senior Director of Temasek Foundation, Singapore.
