PHILIPPINES. The Manila Times (12 December 2023) - The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has approved the Renewable Energy Program for the Agriculture and Fisheries Sector (Repafs) as an infrastructure flagship project (IFP).
"Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable practices in the agri-fishery sector, Repafs aims to integrate renewable energy technologies and systems," the Bureau of Agricultural and Fisheries Engineering (BAFE) said on Monday.
"Repafs is set to revolutionize the agriculture and fisheries sector by providing readily adoptable RE technologies and crucial support services," said DA-BAFE Director Ariodear Rico.
Rico also noted the importance of the program in the effective implementation of RE in the agri-fishery sector, aligning with the National Agricultural and Fishery Modernization and Industrialization Plan and the National Renewable Energy Program.
As an effort toward environmental sustainability and infrastructural advancement, the NEDA Board has approved 194 infrastructure projects under IFPs that are part of the government's Build Better More Program.
According to Rico, Repafs will also serve as a blueprint for the effective implementation of RE programs in the sector, which aims to achieve targets spanning from 2022 to 2030.
These targets include the installation of solar-powered irrigation systems, solar PV systems for diverse applications, ram pump irrigation systems, wind pump irrigation systems, solar tunnel dryers, flatbed dryers with biomass furnaces, and biogas digesters.
The DA-BAFE also recognized the equally important role of human resource development. Training regulations developed by Tesda (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority) on Biogas Systems Installation will be rolled out, as well as Maintenance with National Certificate 3 and Solar Powered Irrigation System Operation and Maintenance with National Certificate 2.
The department also emphasized the crucial role of ongoing Research and Development activities in advancing renewable energy technologies.
"Set to be introduced in the agri-fishery sector from 2025 to 2030, these repackaged technologies exemplify a forward-looking approach to sustainable energy solutions," said BAFE.
