SUNGAI PETANI. Bernama (24 June 2022) - A total of 48,800 trainees are taking courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions under the Rural Development Ministry (KPLB) as of March 31.

KPLB Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the number is expected to increase in line with the marketability level of trainees now at 86.5 per cent.

"We have training at certificate, diploma, degree, master’s and doctorate levels, so this could be the pathway for all with the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM).

"Today, we began the national TVET promotion week, and after this, we will also visit other states to promote the courses we have to offer to our youth who needed support after Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)," he told reporters here today.

Earlier, he officiated the TVET Education Institutions Expo @KPLB 2022 here today which was also attended by KPLB Deputy Minister II Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.

Mahdzir said among the areas which received high demand among industry players for TVET trainees under the ministry included multimedia and digital fields.

Apart from that, trainees undergoing automotive and engineering courses are also high in demand.

He explained that KPLB would ensure the marketability of its trainees by improving the quality of courses offered and the skills matching the needs of the industrial sector.

“What we are doing now is that each course has the cooperation of industry players for matching needs. Otherwise, we may conduct courses which do not meet the requirements of the industry,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mahdzir said the community needs to change its view on TVET which is purportedly for students who failed the academic path.

“We need to continue promoting the many success stories of TVET trainees in the social media as some are still avoiding TVET over the stigma,” he added.

The three-day TVET Education Institutions Expo @KPLB 2022 which began today is an annual platform to promote TVET offered by various agencies and departments under KPLB to recruit new students.

The expo involved the participation and cooperation of 280 TVET institutions of KPLB under seven main KPLB agencies among them, Community Development Department, Orang Asli Development Department, Majlis Amanah Rakyat, and the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda).
