About the Event

Since its inception as an Affiliate Member of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in 2009, the University of Tsukuba (UT) of Japan has been one of the most active SEAMEO Affiliated Members. Through the collaboration with the Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development (CRICED) and the Faculty of Education of the University of Tsukuba, SEAMEO and the University of Tsukuba have developed various teacher development programmes, particularly in Science, Mathematics, and Teacher Education, as well as professional and student exchange programmes – that have benefited to teachers and students of Southeast Asian countries and beyond.

Over ten years, the SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba Symposium has been organised annually with the different themes according to the needs and emerging issues in teacher education between Japan and Southeast Asia.

The last 10th SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba Symposium with the theme “Teacher Education in the Past, Current, and Challenges for Future” and the sub-theme on “Reimagining Teachers Education in the New Normal Post COVID-19” which was supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) Japan, was successfully conducted on 10-12 February 2022 with over 19,000 educators participated in YouTube Live.

In response to this current challenging situation of the post-COVID 19 pandemic, the SEAMEO Secretariat in collaboration with the University of Tsukuba, Japan and supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Japan will virtually organise the 11th SEAMEO-University of Tsukuba (UT) Symposium on 20-21-22 February 2023.

Theme and Objectives:

Under Industrial Revolution 4.0 with digital innovation, we have been engaging in Educational Reform to cultivate Students Agency that can contribute to societal changes for global, regional and local welfare and development.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have witnessed in all countries that teachers and schools have gone through a process of transformation from the conservative modes of teaching to the innovative ways by using the technology.  At the same time, we have also recognised the limitation of current online system in regards to human character formation and reviewed the significance of the onsite education to develop cognitive and non-cognitive competency for the future. On this background, the theme of symposium was set as ‘Technology and Values- Driven Transformation in Education.”

Therefore, the objectives of the Symposium are to:

  1. Provide a platform to showcase and exchange the best practices from all education levels on Technology and Values-Driven Transformation in Education;
  2. Identify opportunities and challenges faced by education transformation and issues concerned in Southeast Asia and Japan; and
  3. Consolidate the policy recommendations, best practices and ways forward in education transformation.
