News: TVET COVID-19 Responses in SEA

TESDA offers free online TVET courses to curb COVID-19 lockdown

Philippines | 09th June 2020

In response to the suspension of group training activities during the COVID-19 lockdown, TESDA has launched its online programme to allow learners and skills trainees undergo skills training and lessons whilst adhering to physical distancing measures. The transition to digital technology will still offer students with national certifications once completed.

The shift to online learning in the TVET industry in response to COVID-19 naturally came with challenges for the TVET skills sector to maintain operations and communications especially between teachers and students. ILO thus in turn has brought forward key measures for a more effective TVET and skill systems in the wake of a new norm. 

Pushing for centralised e-Learning

Malaysia | 13th May 2020

President of the TVET action committee Malaysia raised concerns on the challenges faced in education as a result of COVID-19. The concerns for the proper use of a common e-learning platform across training institutes and standardised measures were addressed to the Human Resources Ministry in the country in order to equip students with the adequate and conducive learning environment.

Learning and mobility during lockdown was the topic of SEAMEO Secretariat’s latest Webinar of their series on SEAMEO’s response to COVID-19. Questions on what are the best practices and lessons learned from the mobility programme and the impact on a post-COVID-19 scenario for learning and mobility are among some that were discussed extensively in the webinar.

Events

LEARNTeach Asia is hosting a virtual conference on new education and training approaches in response to the disruption caused by COVID-19. Among the topics to be discussed in the event are: 'Education and Training Ecosystem Disruption’, 'Creating Effective Pedagogical Approaches’ and 'Solutions For Emerging Needs and Future Opportunities’ in effort to provide valuable insights and concrete solutions for a smooth transition into the new paradigm of education and training.

The BILT virtual conference was held on UNESCO-UNEVOC’s TVet Forum to allow the international TVET community including the UNEVOC Network to gather insights and knowledge on new qualifications and competencies in TVET. The virtual conference covered a broad range of issues, including understanding the demands for new qualifications and competencies in TVET, and integrating new qualifications and competencies in TVET curricula and training regulations.
