Borneo Bulletin, ASEAN (29 September, 2021) - The China-ASEAN Vocational Education Summit Forum 2021 was held virtually in Nanning, Guangxi, China yesterday, to promote collaboration, innovation and cooperation in vocational education between China and ASEAN member countries

The forum was organised by the Ministry of Education of China and the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China.

This year marks the 30th anniversary since the establishment of dialogue relations between China and ASEAN.

As a regional centre in vocational and technical education in the region, SEAMEO-VOCTECH has been participating in the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation week since 2012.

SEAMEO-VOCTECH Centre Director Alias bin Haji Abu Bakar in his keynote speech said that in ASEAN, both at the regional and national levels, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has gained popularity, regardless of it still receiving a relatively poor image in some countries.

“TVET plays a major roles in preparing a skilled workforce. It offers opportunities to anyone keen on developing their skills and in preparing for better employment. To stay relevant, TVET must be dynamic and responsive to the needs of current and future industry requirements. Private sector engagements are also key to ensure TVET stays relevant in many ways, such as by providing resources, expertise, and real working environment,” he said.

“China-ASEAN Vocational Education Summit Forum is an excellent avenue to strengthen the centre’s collaboration with China-ASEAN vocational education, and to open opportunities for the staff and learners to learn outside of the country and gain experience by working alongside and learning from people of diverse backgrounds,” he added.
