Background

In Singapore, the School of Electronics and Info-Communication Technology (SEIT) at Institute of Technical Education College East, is implementing Project-Based Learning with Webinar (PBL with Webinar) as a pedagogical strategy; to engage student learning and student mastery of theoretical and practical skills in server administration.

PBL with Webinar engages students in active learning in the context of realistic projects via three phases: acquiring prerequisite knowledge, creating group content video, sharing and reflection via webinar.

The project tasks are derived by referencing the ‘Skills Framework for Infocomm Technology’; jointly developed by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), Workforce Singapore (WSG), Info-Communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), together with industry associations, education institutions, training providers, organizations and unions. This enables the practice and mastery of real-world skills; which encompasses in-demand existing and emerging skills and competencies, so as to address industry needs accordingly.

The implementation of PBL with Webinar has resulted in a significant drop in disengaged learning behaviour and improvement in attendance and punctuality. Improved student motivation through this technology-supported active learning approach brings students closer to attaining mastery learning, to be both examination-ready and work-ready.

The variety of technology tools, student activities and delivery modes employed in PBL with Webinar could be adapted in other technical institutions as part of micro-learning or micro-practice while the Skills Framework used could be referenced to promote real-world skills mastery and lifelong learning.
